Friday Memo: September 8, 2017

Fox PD Offerings
One of our excellent school district partners is the Fox C-6 School District. They have invited any MBU faculty in the Education division to attend any of their professional development opportunities for free! This is an incredible blessing to each of you not only because it is offered at no cost, but more importantly because the PD is being offered to ensure that teachers (and the future teachers we train) are learning best teaching practices and specific content. Fox's Beginning Teaching Assistance Program (BTAP) document above describes the workshops designed to be brief meetings to learn about best practice related to instruction to help support new teachers. Amy said, "We would love to see students leaving university with some background knowledge in any of these topics so we would love for your professors to attend." Alicia Noddings, Susan Hladky, Tammy Cox, and Teresa Tesreau-Boggs attended a Google PD opportunity at Fox this summer and will be sharing what they learned at our upcoming PD meeting.

The administration at Fox has also invited us to participate in any of their PEP classes. See details at the end of this Friday Memo. If you are interested in attending one or more of the BTAP or PEP workshops, please email Nancy of your interest.

Scholarship Winners
At our August 22, 2017 faculty meeting we chose Autumn Hale to receive the 2017 Medart, Inc. Scholarship. This is awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in an education-related field of study. There are no funds attached to this scholarship, but it is an honor and one that Autumn can add to her resume.
We chose Madeline Smith to be the recipient of the 2017 Commerce Bank Scholarship. This is also awarded to an outstanding student enrolled in an education-related field of study with no funds attached. Madeline can add this well-deserved honor to her resume as well.
Congratulations to both girls!

Meals for Millions
Sheri Brandt and her daughter participated in the Meals for Millions that was held Saturday, August 26, 2017 at the St. Charles Family Arena. Ruth Banks, MBU Adjunct, and her daughter also helped; as well as our new campus minister, Aaron Lumpkin and his two sons. It was a great event that helped many.

EPP/DESE Business Meeting
Susan Hladky, Angela McGowan, Jan Speck, and I attended the EPP/DESE Business meeting on Wednesday, September 6 in Columbia, MO. Pearson and ETS presented updates and resources related to the assessments for our students. We also had an opportunity to meet the new Director for the Office of Educator Quality. Dr. Suzanne Hull has replaced Hap Hairston and will lead Missouri's Educator Preparation Programs into the future.

Google in the Classroom
Susan Hladky, Alicia Noddings, Tammy Cox, Michael Broombaugh, Jerry McKittrick and I met today to discuss using Google Drive, Classroom, Docs, etc. in our classrooms. Our students are already using this and we need to make sure we are giving them what they will need when they graduate and begin teaching. I'm looking forward to learning with you all in some upcoming faculty meetings. Michael Broombaugh was showing us some of the ways he integrates google drive into his elementary math and science methods classes. I am so proud of the way he is integrating technology into his classroom. Our students need to see us modeling and integrating technology.

EDUC 303 Methods of Teaching & Differentiated Instruction Class
Mary Ann Bouas spoke to Mark Engelhardt's class about working with students who are English language learners.

Upcoming CAEP Data Review Meetings
We will be reviewing CAEP data at upcoming faculty and director meetings. Some of you may also be emailed by Nancy to set up a meeting with me to review data specific to your course, RLC, or program. I look forward to digging into the data analysis with you to Review, Reflect, and Revise our programs to pursue excellence in all areas!

Meeting Reminders
September 12: Faculty Meeting at 10:15 a.m. in FLD 115. Meet at the rotunda for the group picture before meeting.

Closing Thoughts
Are you addicted to your smartphone? Kathleen Bauer, adjunct and teacher at Rossman Elementary, shared the following idea related to millennials and their addiction to their phones. I have a feeling most of are more millennial than we think...
The Millennials are characterized as the digital natives who cannot live without technology.  Their cell phone always has to be within reach!  I say it’s not just the Millennials who’ve grown overly attached to their phones.  I see people from all four generations checking their phones constantly during meetings or even during a brief water cooler conversation. According to Dr. David Greenfield, Computer technologies can be addictive, he says, because they're "psychoactive." That is, they alter mood and often trigger enjoyable feelings. Email, in particular, gives us satisfaction due to what psychologists call "variable ratio reinforcement." That is, we never know when we'll get a satisfying email, so we keep checking, over and over again. "It's like slot machines," Greenfield says. "We're seeking that pleasurable hit." Are you addicted to your cell phone?  Your email?  Try leaving your cell phone (tablet and any other device that has email and internet capability) in your office instead of taking it with you to a meeting. How does being without “connectivity” make you feel?  Are you anxious?  Distracted? If this exercise proves that you can’t live without your phone and you were born before 1982, then you might be more “millennial” than you thought!
