Friday Memo 11/11/2016

Veteran's Day
We owe a debt of gratitude to all former and current military men and women for their service to our country. Please take a few minutes and read the Missing Man Table note that is placed on a table in the dining hall. This note brought some of us to tears as we reflected on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. If you are on campus, I encourage you to stop in the dining hall to see the display.

Operation Christmas Child
What a blessing to work at an institution where we enjoy giving and serving those in need! It was so fun to see the many departments on campus quickly volunteering to meet the needs. Mary Ann Bouas and Ellen John gathered goodies for the shoe boxes from the student education organizations.

Division Faculty Meeting
Thanks for your attendance and participation on Tuesday when we discussed a variety of topics: ACT admission procedures, analysis of enrollment trends, and a discussion around 2015-2016 assessment results as noted in our division SWOTs.

YESS Recruitment Meeting
With our first Yearlong Experience for Spartan Students cohort in full swing, it is time to start the next cohort. Susan and I met with some students eligible to participate this upcoming semester. Three of the current students shared their experiences and it was truly amazing to hear of their depth of knowledge and understanding. Please encourage students to consider participating in this powerful yearlong internship. Contact Susan Hladky for more information.

Fun in the Classroom
Michael Broombaugh's Science Methods students were measuring the strength of their popsicle stick bridges. I always enjoy seeing the learning in action!

Staff Meeting
Ricki Roth led our staff meeting on Wednesday. She did an AWESOME job sharing information about Outlook that many of us did not know! I sat in that meeting learning new things and realizing that our team is amazing. Each one of you has skills and talents that we need to share. I am hoping to offer more opportunities for staff and faculty to share their knowledge with each other! We should be life-long learners and tap into our internal wealth of human resources.

Main Campus Certification Celebration
The student teachers did a fantastic job sharing of their experiences and being vulnerable as they gave advice and words of wisdom to a large group of Field I and Field II students. I heard some consistent themes: make relationships with your students so you can learn what they are dealing with at home, the kids are fun and funny, MoPTA was okay, and about working with your cooperating teacher. There were tears as many of the student teachers got emotional talking about their experiences. Hearing their stories reminded me how precious our students are and that they are enduring some of the toughest days of their lives. We must continue to support and love them through it!

CACREP Meeting
Counseling faculty, administration, graduate advisors, records, and RLC deans worked diligently to hammer out important details as we transition to our new CACREP aligned graduate counseling program. Thanks to all of you who attended and endured the long, but very important meeting.

Upcoming Meetings
11/14  Faculty Meeting
11/16  Curriculum Committee Meeting
11/22  Division Faculty Meeting
11/29  Director Meeting

Closing Thoughts
Wow, what a week! The election and the months leading up to the election have been interesting to say the least. Today I am grateful for many things, but feel it important to express gratitude that I get to live in this great land. I am grateful for veterans and those in the military. I am grateful for public servants who work for the government. Living in the United States of America is a blessing because of those who serve and especially for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
