Friday Memo 10/7/16
Spartan Preview Day
Spartan Preview Day was held Saturday, October 1. Tammy Cox, Ellen John, and I represented the Education Division and met with several prospective students and their parents. This is always a great day to promote our outstanding division and help students decide on their career paths.
Teacher Education Council
On Monday the Teacher Education Council met. The Teacher Education Council is an advisory group consisting of PK-12 school personnel and MBU faculty. This group of educators gathers at least twice per year to discuss partnership opportunities, clinical practice, curriculum, program components, and regional hiring needs. It is important to us in the Education Division at MBU that we ensure that effective partnerships and high-quality clinical practice are central to our preparation programs. On this meeting's agenda were the YESS Program and the First Year Teacher/Principal surveys. We received valuable feedback from those in the room, including the program director from the St. Charles Community College and an administrator from Living Word Christian School. A faculty member from the Business Division, a number of counseling faculty members and teacher education faculty members were present as well as representation from the PK-12 world. Kaitlin Little, one of our students in the YESS Program, shared her thoughts about the program and her personal blog. This was posted in the September 2 edition of the Friday Memo, but you can click here to read her blog post, titled 6 Things I Learned From the First Grade as a College Senior, in case you didn't see it.
S.W.O.T.S.
Alicia and I met and have been working diligently this week on the S.W.O.T.S. document. Looking closely at our enrollment trends has been interesting and I'm looking forward to sharing the data with you at the faculty meeting on Tuesday.
K12 Partnership Meeting with Advisers
On Tuesday morning Susan Hladky led a meeting with the teacher education advisers and RLC Deans to discuss the new program and to get feedback as we expand the program. Grace White, Sheri Brandt, Ricki Roth, Amber Henry, Rosanne McCoy, and Kathleen Wendt attended.
Director of Assessment Meeting
I met with David Collum to discuss the assessment initiatives going on at the university and in our division. Faculty need to begin considering the assessment data they collect on their course objectives. More to come on this topic.
Flu Shots
Nancy and I got our flu shot on Tuesday. If you need one, you can make an appointment at the Mercy Clinic on campus. They are open Monday - Thursday, 1 - 5 p.m. (There were no tears shed.)
Cohort Meeting
I met with Grace White, Larry Richardson, Clark Triplett, Debby Dumey, and Tammy Cox to create procedures for starting new cohorts. We are working on documents and will share them with the RLCs when they are completed. We are excited about the possibility of new cohorts, because it allows us to bring our programs to new students who may otherwise not attend MBU. It's also good for us to establish cohorts in our local PK-12 schools, as those students who join the cohorts may continue their education with us even past the cohort.
Next Term
The second 8 week term starts in two Mondays and we have finalized our schedule. Please make note that your canvas shells will go live a week from today.
ACSI Conference
In preparation for the Association of Christian Schools International Conference, I met with leadership at First Baptist O'Fallon Christian Academy to ensure that our technology needs are met. Thanks again to those faculty members who will be presenting at this conference. What a blessing it is that we are able to serve the community and share our knowledge with local Christian educators. I'm looking forward to this conference which takes place next Thursday and Friday.
Students in the Lincoln County R3 Cohort in Applications of Technology are working through their Google Tools assignment.
DESE Meeting in Jefferson City
Jan Speck and counseling faculty from other universities met this week and worked hard for the School Counseling profession.
Closing Thoughts
The news is full of Hurricane Matthew updates and even though we are safe in the mid-west, it makes us a little anxious for the millions of people that are affected by this massive storm. We always have the avenue of prayer for these situations and that should calm any fears we have. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

News from Troy/Wentzville Campus
James Bertels sent the following items about his students. It's great to see the pictures and read about what is happening through our regional learning centers!
In Integrated Math Concepts (ELED 433), students must find a community resource and think about how they would integrate math and other disciplines into that resource. This is always a very enjoyable assignment. Students walk away with many ideas for their future classroom. Resources covered included everything from the St. Louis Science Center to a trip to the golf course!
