Friday Memo 9/30/16
Ron Brandly
This week we celebrated the life of Ron Brandly and mourn his death from this earth, but we rest assured that he is teaching and talking and loving people in heaven. Ron was one of the most joyful and kind men I have ever met. He truly loved working at Missouri Baptist University and working with doctoral students. At his funeral there were several references made about Missouri Baptist University and his love of working with the people at MBU. At the luncheon that followed the funeral, Shelton Smith had the opportunity to share of Ron's service to teaching and serving on dissertation committees. A couple of our doctoral graduates, Elaine Henderson and Todd Culbertson, were there to attest to his caring attitude. We are grateful for his service and will miss him dearly!
HLC
Thanks to those of you who played a part in this week's visit with the HLC team. We appreciate your willingness to participate in interviews and validate the contents of our assurance argument. We look forward to reading their report and will keep you updated on our accreditation status.
Division Faculty Meeting
A huge shout out goes to Alicia Noddings for her work facilitating the CAEP workshop on Tuesday as the faculty learned about standards 3 & 5 and collaborated to determine evidence demonstrating our meeting of those standards. The counseling faculty and I met to review curriculum and changes that will take place in our program as we pursue CACREP accreditation. We are making substantial progress and now working on a transition plan that will clearly articulate how we will offer the new program to our first cohort in the fall 2017, while at the same time offering the "old" program to students currently in the program.
MoGEA Writing Workshop
Based on data, we have identified that the writing section of the MoGEA has been a challenge for some of our students. You will be receiving an email from Alicia Noddings announcing a MoGEA Writing Workshop to be offered by Elizabeth Busekrus. Alicia, Elizabeth, and I have been meeting to determine a meaningful agenda to help students become better prepared for the writing section of the MoGEA. We will be sharing a flyer with students who are registered for the MoGEA. Feel free to share the flyer with your students and encourage them to attend.
Health and Wellness Fair
The Health and Wellness Fair was this week and if you didn't get a chance to go, you missed out!!! Nancy and I enjoyed taking a selfie with one of the owls on display. If you look really closely behind us you can see the owl that was turned around. It was really hard to take the selfie while the owl was looking forward. (I am not sure what the owls had to do with health and wellness, but they sure were cool to see!!!)
Field Experience & Student Teaching Placement Meeting
Susan Hladky, Angela McGowan, Vanessa Hathaway, and I met to discuss our procedures for placing our students for the various field experiences in our certification programs. We wanted to discuss our procedures to determine current practices and to discuss possible alternatives to make the process as streamlined and quick as possible. I am so grateful to Angela and Vanessa for the work they do with our students and our school partners. It is not an easy job!! One of the possibilities suggested was to eliminate the collection of the $5 dues. This has not been finalized yet, but is a possibility that is on the table. We will discuss this at the next faculty meeting.
MCED
I attended the Missouri Council of Education Deans meeting hosted at Lindenwood University yesterday. This group of deans discussed the proposed community college AAT agreement, APR 2.0, and a possible Ed-Fi Data System Sharing and Management of which the state of Missouri may be an early adopter. I always enjoy this meeting as it is good to hear from other deans across the state to discuss issues that impact all of our programs.
Upcoming Meetings
Have a great weekend!

Closing Thoughts
I got to do one of my favorite things today - visit my student teacher. I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE watching our students in the field. Not only is it rewarding for me to get to help our students become better teachers, but so much is revealed through their performance that stems from their preparation at MBU. I am able to see the multitude of strengths in our programs by watching them in a classroom. I am also able to see gaps that are sometimes simply with one student, but perhaps are indicative of our program. The good news of today is that my student teacher had a fantastic lesson and excellent classroom management. She needed to move around the classroom more, but I look forward to visiting her again to see her improvement.Have a great weekend!
