Yearlong Experience for Spartan Seniors (YESS) Update
Our first group of students participating in the YESS program is off to a great start! Below are some pictures from their first day of school. At Tillman Elementary in the Kirkwood School District, Andrea Hassler and Christina Davis were helping in kindergarten classrooms.  Kaitlin Little, Abbie Thornton and Megan Taylor are three of our MBU YESS students that are doing their senior field experience by assisting in kindergarten classrooms at Valley Park Elementary in Valley Park School District. We are super excited for them and this great opportunity! Click here to read a remarkable personal blog post by one of the participants, Kaitlin Little, titled 6 Things I learned from The First Grade as a College Senior.

President's Party
I always enjoy the annual president's party. Dr. Lacey and his wife do a fantastic job reminding us that we are part of something special here at MBU. The recognition of new employees and folks who have been around for a while is always enlightening as we hear about their families and interests. Who knew that Dr. Dykstra enjoyed vacuuming his carpet? Hopefully, those of you who were honored felt appreciated and celebrated.

Directors Meeting
Program Directors met this week to discuss program review, syllabi revision procedure, and SWOTs. I am so grateful to this group for their efforts piloting the program review in Campus Labs this past spring and summer. At times it felt like "the blind leading the blind." But as with most pilots, you learn as you go. They analyzed enrollment data and university, division, and program documents to review each program. Going through this process annually will position us to be in a constant state of program improvement.

Chapel
Joe White, former speaker for Promise Keepers and founder of Kanakuk Camps in Branson, MO presented a powerful and dramatic message yesterday in chapel. When I was in college I was a camp counselor one summer at Kanakuk Camp. It was a pleasure to see Joe White again and reflect on his powerful message.

Alumni Awards
You all should have received an email from Brian Knapp about Alumni Awards. I wanted to highlight his request because it is very important that we nominate some of our outstanding Education Division alumni for these awards. As you all know, we have some pretty amazing alumni who are doing great work out in schools. This is our chance to celebrate their successes. Please take a few minutes to nominate someone.

Email from Brian: "Below is a link to our Alumni Awards and nomination form.  The Alumni Awards will take place during Homecoming week at the Alumni Chapel held on October 20.  Please consider nominating an alum for one of our five awards, and a current student for the Mission in Action award.  We have so many alumni and current students who are worthy of recognition, but we need your help in honoring them.  Please submit all nominations by Friday, September 9.  The form is quick and easy, and could mean so much to someone who is nominated. "

Closing Thoughts

As we begin college football season, I would like to leave you today with some great quotes by Vince Lombardi.
The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.
The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.
Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.

Please keep Mark Engelhardt in your prayers as he is recovering from gall bladder surgery.
