Friday Memo 9/16/16

Education Division Meet & Greet
The SMSTA/SASCD main campus student organizations sponsored the Meet & Greet last Friday at the Perk. We had a wonderful turnout and it was a great opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to get to know one another. Ellen John made some delicious cookies and SMSTA/SASCD provided food and drinks for those in attendance, and a few lucky students won door prizes. Shout out to Nichole Dales and Ricki Roth for all of their efforts to make this event a huge success! I can't wait to see how the students participate in these professional organizations this year.

Spartan Football
My husband, Brian, and I were able to enjoy the MBU football team last Saturday. I would like to encourage you to attend some sporting events. It was so much fun to see so many of our education students cheering, dancing, and playing football. The only thing missing was a marching band - maybe someday soon!

New Doctoral Cohort Reception/Orientation
Thank you so much Heather Goodin, Shelton Smith, and Julie Moore for organizing another successful cohort orientation. Thanks to those administrators and faculty members who spent some time mingling with and introducing yourselves to the new students. We receive feedback from students that they truly appreciate this event. It is a wonderful introduction to MBU for those who are new to our university and a wonderful event to prepare the students for the doctoral program.

Outreach Meeting
I met earlier in the week with administration from Windsor Crossing Church. We are discussing outreach education opportunities at local school districts to determine how we can work together to meet some needs in local schools. You will be hearing more about these opportunities as we solidify our role with schools in the Ferguson/Florissant and St. Louis Public School districts.

Lincoln County R-III Partnership Meeting
Sheri Brandt, Shelton Smith, and I met with Superintendent, Dr. Mark Penny, and Troy High School Principal,  Dr. Jerry Raines to discuss our YESS program and our dual credit program. We value our partnership with the Lincoln County R-III School District. Many of our students live or have lived in Lincoln County and will continue to serve in schools in the district. We will continue serving high school students interested in receiving college credit while in high school. We are one step closer to solidifying one more YESS partnership with one of the Lincoln County R-III elementary schools.

CEEDAR
Shelton Smith and I are in Jefferson City today at a CEEDAR state leadership team meeting. Susan Hladky and Tammy Cox prepared a presentation to share with the group that explained what they learned at the national CEEDAR state convening meeting in Washington D.C. We are continuing our work at the state level utilizing CEEDAR resources, which benefits our programs and students here at MBU. Some of you may already be aware of the following resources, but for those of you who may not be familiar, as defined on their website, the IRIS Center is a "national center dedicated to improving education outcomes for all children, especially those with disabilities birth through age twenty-one, through the use of effective evidence-based practices and interventions." This website is full of excellent resources for faculty to use in their classrooms. There are modules that you should feel free to utilize. Take a few minutes and browse the IRIS website
I would also like to encourage all of you to learn more about the Missouri Observation Simulation Tool, also called MOST.  When you go to the MOST website you will need to register the first time you go to the site, but it is well worth the few minutes it takes to register. This site houses videos of actual teachers teaching children. An observation tool is provided and could be used as an in-class assignment where you watch a video with your students and assess and/or discuss what is happening in the classroom.

CACREP
Clint Limoges, Dr. Dykstra, Dr. Triplett, and I met to discuss our progress. Clint has done a fabulous job moving us forward. He and the other counseling faculty members are working hard updating curriculum to meet the CACREP standards. The administration is brainstorming ways to address the faculty/student ratio requirements and increase in program hours. Our students and our university will benefit by our pursuit of this accreditation.

Closing Thoughts
Today's focus of our CEEDAR meeting was centered around field experiences. As a division, we need to continue focusing on our field experiences and ensuring that our programs give our students adequate clinical practice opportunities. Whether you supervise teacher candidates, counselors, or leaders, or you teach a class that has a course-embedded field experience requirement, we need to ensure that the quality of those experiences is just as important as the quantity of time students spend in those field experiences.

Have a fantastic weekend!
Melanie
