Friday Memo 10/2/15
Education Division Norms
Based on a synthesis of the feedback provided by the faculty members who attended the PD session with Suzanne Bright, the following norms were established. I encourage all of you to remember these norms as we work together.
We will…..
- Be led by Christ.
- Keep our actions and conversations “above the line” by owning the successes or failures of every student and gently redirecting one another when we fall “below the line”.
- Be receptive to all ideas and consider perspectives, agreeing to disagree when necessary.
- Collaborate with one another and share what is working.
- Be positive in our approaches and interactions.
- Communicate openly, honestly, and diplomatically, and speak directly to a person if there is an issue.

Core Alignment Document and Syllabus Meeting
Sheri Brandt, Tim Delicath, David Collum, Tina Ketterer,
Ellen John, Gina Walker, Kristie Breeding, and I met to review the most
up-to-date syllabi requirements. The office staff will be updating all syllabi
to reflect the new university attendance policy and title for the Core
Alignment Document. Sheri Brandt will be emailing out spring syllabi around
Thanksgiving. Lead Instructors – if your master syllabus needs adjustments,
please submit to Sheri Brandt as soon as possible.
Student Interviews
Here is a picture of Jim Chellew and Erica Bumpers
conducting a student interview with Brock Fierge, one of our excellent teacher
candidates. For those adjuncts that may
be unfamiliar with our interview process, we require candidates to complete an
interview with faculty prior to being admitted into the teacher education
program. Students are also required to complete another interview prior to
student teaching. I have heard from
students and faculty that this experience is one of the unique requirements of
our program that helps our students in their professional journey. Students are
given opportunities to experience the stress of an interview, learn the
importance of professional dress and appearance, and most importantly the
students learn the importance of being able to communicate clearly their
content and pedagogical knowledge with an interviewer. I wish I had been
required to participate in interviews when I was in college. Thanks to all faculty members who share of your time and energy to help guide these
teacher candidates.
Goodbye, Kristie!
The office staff enjoyed a celebratory lunch to express our
gratitude to Kristie for her years of service to our division. We will miss her
very much!
