Friday Memo: November 17, 2017

Dr. Keith Ross named next President!
The Board of Trustees announced yesterday that Keith Ross will be our next president beginning on January 10, while Dr. Alton Lacey will serve as the Chancellor until his retirement next summer. Congratulations, Dr. Ross! We look forward to serving under your leadership for many years to come.

Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award
MBU assistant professor and Assistant Dean of Education Dr. Alicia Noddings has been recognized as a recipient of the 2017 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. Noddings joins 108 St. Louis area colleagues across K-12 and higher education who were honored for their commitment to students and their outstanding work in the classroom. Educators were nominated by administrators at their institutions.

Awards were presented Sunday, November 12 during a ceremony and reception at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton. Pictured here at the ceremony are Dr. Noddings and Missouri Baptist University Provost Dr. Arlen Dykstra. The Excellence in Teaching Awards program, now in its 29th year, is sponsored annually by St. Louis-based Emerson to recognize outstanding educators in the eight-county St. Louis metropolitan area.

CAEP Update
I continue meeting with stakeholders to discuss the data analysis to determine how we can continue improving. I met with Cynthia Sutton and Brenda Bradford on Monday to review our Education Division Recruitment plan. We discussed the action items in our plan and made a few additions to the plan to continue recruiting diverse students into our programs.
Yesterday I met with David Collum and Cathy Jones to discuss the results of the Student Self-Assessment of Diversity Proficiency surveys. The entire teacher education faculty will be reviewing these at the upcoming Division/PD meeting on Tuesday, November 28. Reviewing the disaggregated data by RLC, certification area, and in some instances by gender and ethnicity of our students is enlightening as we analyze that data and make program decisions.
We have also been working with the IT department to ensure we have the adequate technology in place for the team when they come for the site visit in February. More details about the visit will be coming in the next few weeks.
Once again I want to give a shout out to Alicia and David for all of the work they are putting into the upcoming site visit. Thank you both so much!

CACREP Update
Clint, Counselor Ed Faculty, and I have been interviewing potential full-time and adjunct faculty members. We are meeting some highly qualified candidates and we look forward to introducing some new faces in the very near future.
Our spring cohort enrollment numbers are growing by the day. God continues to bless our CACREP aligned (not yet accredited) program and students keep coming. The Counselor Education faculty deserve a big round of applause for their patience and perseverance with the live streaming and I am grateful that they have been troopers learning how to use Zoom with their students. Thanks, Clint, for leading the Counselor Education faculty well.

CEEDAR Update
Susan Hladky and I are at our final CEEDAR meeting in Jefferson City today, unless the grant is extended. We are discussing upcoming professional development opportunities and sustainability of the CEEDAR work.

Spartan Athlete of the Week
This week's Spartan Athlete of the Week is Men’s Basketball standout, Pablo Hernandez! Pablo Hernandez helped lead Men's Basketball to a 2-0 start. The junior recorded a double-double against Lincoln Christian on Tuesday, posting 15 points and 10 rebounds. Hernandez is averaging 14 points per game so far this season. Pablo is one of our Education students working on his Physical Education degree. We encourage you to attend a basketball game and cheer on one of our own!

Education Division Faculty Meeting
Rebekah McKinney joined our meeting to talk about the Education collections in the library and that they need our help in reviewing the collections.

Susan Hladky received the Traveling Apple award on Tuesday at our Education Division Faculty meeting. The Traveling Apple award is given to faculty who show outstanding work in the classroom. Susan's students say: *Dr. Hladky challenged us with real-life application of the skills and concepts we discussed in class. *I love this class and the professor. *Every assignment was very engaging and interesting to me. *I enjoyed professor Hladky simply because you can tell she cares.

Closing Thoughts
Andy Stanley is one of my favorite authors. I have read many of his books and listen often to his leadership podcasts. One of my favorite books of his, Next Generation Leader, Five Essentials for Those Who Will Shape the Future, outlines five irreducible essentials for the next generation leaders:
1. Competence
2. Courage
3. Clarity
4. Coaching
5. Character
In the book's introduction Andy discussed that in leadership, success is succession, and his hope is to share these ideas with the next generation of leaders.

MBU has been blessed with outstanding leadership and Dr. Lacey and the Board of trustees has positioned our institution for success by naming Dr. Keith Ross as our next leader. Keith has competence, courage, clarity, coaching by mentors, and character.
Romans 12: 6,8 reminds us that "We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is...leadership, let him govern diligently."
May we all continue to pray for Dr. Ross, Dr. Lacey, and the Board as they lead and govern MBU diligently.

There will not be a Friday Memo next week due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Please enjoy your time off!
