Friday Memo - March 31, 2017
MACTE Conference
Monday, March 27 through Wednesday, March 29 was the Spring MACTE Conference in Columbia. Susan Hladky, Alicia Noddings, David Collum, and I attended. David and I made two presentations (along with one of our research partners, Larinee Dennis, from Hannibal LaGrange) sharing the results of our SimSchool research studies.
On Wednesday the Outstanding Beginning Teacher awards banquet was held where two of our first year teachers earned this recognition and distinction. Kristen Strange is teaching in the Rockwood School District and Julie Lembke is teaching in the Wentzville School District. We are so proud of these two ladies and the great job they are doing teaching the next generation.
Power Outage at Main Campus
There was a power outage on the afternoon of Thursday, March 30 on Main Campus. The Doctoral Reception/Orientation meeting was being held in the FLD Conference Room, which has no windows. As I was trying to find another room with windows to continue the meeting, I came upon this classroom where Judy Smith was still teaching, even in the dark. Way to SHINE ON!
If you haven't LIKED our Missouri Baptist University Education Division Facebook page, you need to do so now! Here are some of the stories that appeared this week.
Student Teacher at Fox School District
Michelle Knobeloch is student teaching at Clyde Hamrick Elementary in the Fox School District. She was having fun with her students by having them make root beer floats to illustrate solids, liquids, and gases. TEACH ON!
Tammy Cox and Will Collins
I challenged our faculty to choose a student that makes them want to come to work each day. Tammy chose Will. She had a conversation with him about the qualities he brings as a "learner" that makes her job as a "teacher" so rewarding. Will said he was humbled that Tammy picked him and that he was glad to be recognized in such a way. Please accept this challenge and send me and Nancy Sickler an email with a picture and brief description why you chose the student you did.
John Bobeen
John Bobeen is the student teacher that I supervise. I video-taped our conversation and it is posted on the Facebook page. Go check it out and Like the page while you're there. Here's a picture of John teaching. He's going to be a middle school math teacher and recently accepted a position for the fall. He is one of our first spring student teachers to be offered a teaching position for next year.
Upcoming Meetings
April 4: Outstanding Student Achievement Awards at 7 p.m.
April 5: Main Campus Certification Celebration at 5:30 p.m. in FLD 326
April 11: Education Division Faculty Meeting at 10:15 a.m. in FLD 115
Closing Thoughts
March is over and the end of the 2016-2017 school year will be here before we know it. This can be a difficult time for our students, as well as faculty because we're tired and tend to get anxious for the year to be over; not to mention the stress of finals! Be strong - continue steadfast - finish the race!
Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

Doctoral Reception/Orientation
We welcomed the most recent doctoral cohort last night at the Doctoral Reception/Orientation. Dr. Shelton Smith does a tremendous job with the doctoral program. I am so grateful for his leadership and the high quality program that has been built over the years. Students, alumni, faculty, and administration members attended the event. This orientation event is an important first impression we make on these students as they embark on the doctoral journey.Power Outage at Main Campus
