Friday Memo 4/8/16

ASCD National Conference - Atlanta, GA
Mark Engelhardt and Ricki Roth took two of our SASCD/SMSTA students, Jessica Wallace and Erica Gilmore, to the national convention earlier this week. I am so thankful for Mark and Ricki for making this opportunity a reality for Erica and Jessica. I was blessed to attend a national ASCD conference in Chicago a few years back. The gathering is an awesome event to learn practical strategies and hear from many leaders in our field. This was a trip of a lifetime for Jessica and Erica. They were also able to visit the Atlanta aquarium and an Atlanta Braves game. Here are some pictures of their adventures!

Kappa Delta Pi Initiation- Main Campus
Mary Ann Bouas does a great job organizing our Kappa Delta Pi organization. This is a great scholarly opportunity for our students.

CEEDAR - Lead Instructor Syllabus Review
Susan Hladky, Sheri Brandt, Tonia Crane, Alicia Noddings, and Mary Ann Bouas met with Charity Schluter, doctoral student, and Thurma DeLoach to review the professional education course syllabi to track the level of coverage of specified evidence-based practices found on the CEEDAR Center's website - click here for the Innovation Configurations. We will review a portion of Charity's presentation at the division faculty meeting on Tuesday, in particular, meta-analysis research conducted by John Hattie. It is important that we understand the high impact teaching strategies and ensure we have them included in our syllabi.

CAEP Update
Tonia Crane, Angela McGowan, Kathleen Wendt, and I have worked on the annual CAEP report and submitted today (a week prior to the deadline!) Ladies, thanks for your efforts!
Alicia Noddings, Tonia Crane, and I continue to meet weekly to discuss the CAEP standards and how we will move forward with our self-study. We will talk more about this at the faculty meeting Tuesday. We might just have a quiz on Tuesday to see if you remember the standards.
Standard 1: Content & Pedagogical Knowledge
Standard 2: Clinical Partnerships & Practice
Standard 3: Candidate Quality, Recruitment, & Selectivity
Standard 4: Program Impact
Standard 5: Provider Quality, Continuous Improvement, and Capacity

Student Teaching MoPTA Celebration
We have awesome students!!! I LOVE hearing from our student teachers at the MoPTA celebration. Rather than talking about the MoPTA I asked the student teachers to answer a few questions for the Field students. It was an incredibly positive evening, a time of sharing, reflection and learning!
Here are just a few of the quotes I noted:

  • I learned to think before I react.
  • Watch what your teacher does when she is not teaching.
  • Get involved in the students' lives.
  • My favorite place in my classroom is the trapezoid learning table. We don't have teacher desks and I really enjoyed the space for group work.
  • Don't do more than 15 minutes of notes. You need a variety of learning activities.
  • Your students will get mad at you. That's okay.
  • My favorite time of the day is when I greet them in the morning.
  • You are that constant and dependable person in many kids' lives.

Teacher Education Council
The Teacher Education Council met Thursday afternoon. What a wonderful time of sharing with our school partners, content faculty members, and Education division faculty members. We reviewed and analyzed data regarding enrollment numbers, our students' content & pedagogical knowledge, clinical partnerships, and candidate quality. We discussed mutually beneficial partnerships and the partnerships that currently exist. We brainstormed ways to collect evidence of our program impact when students graduate and teach in our state's PK-12 schools. We also discussed regional hiring trends and labor statistics. Finally, the council members completed a survey that will be discussed at our division faculty meeting on Tuesday. It was a great event and an excellent opportunity to hear from our PK-12 schools and our content faculty.

St. Charles Community College Advisory Board
Just a few hours after our Teacher Education Council meeting, I attended a similar event at St. Charles Community College. It was great to hear what is happening in the Education program at SCC and discuss ways we can strengthen our articulation agreements and partnerships.

School Human Resources & Career Services Association
Susan Hladky and I attended a SHRCSA luncheon today. This event is an excellent opportunity to network with PK-12 HR Directors and Assistant Superintendents. In addition to the networking, we heard from an education lawyer as she provided legal advice regarding providing recommendations for current and past employees.

Missouri's Child Advocacy Day
Alicia Noddings joined parents, child care professionals, health care providers, and community members to speak up and ask lawmakers to, as noted on the Child Advocacy Day website, "make the health, safety, and education of Missouri's children a top priority for the state." She also met with Tracy McReery, the District 88 State Representative. I encourage all of you to begin or remain active with important legislative issues that impact our work with children.

Closing Thoughts
This week at chapel, Jonathan White, shared from Philemon. I am certain I have heard the story, but it was wonderful to be reminded. It was great to hear the context of the words as they were written in God's promises to us.
When I read these words I think of you and the many people who work together with us to prepare the next generation of educators.
Philemon 1:3-7
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord's people.

Grace and peace to you this weekend!
Melanie
