Friday Memo 4/1/16

Doctoral Cohort Reception
Thanks to President Lacey and the other executive leaders who attended and shared in the reception. A special thank you to Shelton Smith and Heather Goodin for putting together an excellent event for our newest cohort of doctoral students. The casual atmosphere to begin the evening gave faculty, administrators, alumni, and students an opportunity to chat, get to know one another, and discuss research interests. After leaving the Art Gallery we headed down to the Field Conference Room for more information about what the students can expect in the program. Informal feedback from the students communicated their appreciation that so many MBU faculty and administration attended to provide a warm welcome.

MACTE
Alicia Noddings, Susan Hladky, Tonia Crane and I attended the MACTE conference earlier this week. We will provide an update at the next division faculty meeting of important statewide information that we learned at the conference. Susan and I also presented our recent work with the CEEDAR Center, such as the  MoEdu-Sail website.

Ballwin Elementary Leadership Day
Julie Hume, administrative intern and one of our alumni, invited us to participate in Ballwin Elementary School's #ThisisBallwin Day event today that highlighted the leadership of all of their students, particularly the fifth graders. I am inspired by what I see happening at Ballwin Elementary school. All students are taught from kindergarten through 5th grade that they are leaders and what it means to be a good leader, not only as they interact with others but also as they set their goals and work to achieve those goals. The students in a variety of classes showed us their Leader Binder which included class mission, personal goals, and data to show growth in those goals. I was reminded how important our work is as we prepare educators to work with children.

Counseling Program in Illinois
MAC - School Certification - Charlene Slates, Loftin Woodiel and I have been working together to establish a new course for students pursuing certification in counseling in Illinois as the state now requires literacy and ELL competencies. I appreciate everyone's hard work as we have expedited a solution to meet the needs of our students.

Closing Thoughts
1 Corinthians 4:2 - Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

I feel that God has given a trust to work with children and those who will work with children. We must prove faithful to that which God has entrusted us.

Have a great weekend!
Melanie
