The beauty of the snow!

Some of you may be sick and tired of the snow and the cold! I actually love winter. I enjoy the beauty of the snow. I like that the bad weather often forces me and my family to stay indoors and hang out in front of the fire. I must admit I do not like the traffic that comes along with snow, the Thursday morning commute was not fun!! Thanks to all of you who braved the bad roads and traffic and joined us on campus yesterday.

This week has been relatively quiet, but here is a highlight...

Counseling
Mary Ann Conaway and I have been interviewing candidates for the open counseling faculty position. Please pray that God would bring the right person to join us. I view hiring as one of the most important (if not THE most important) duty in my role as the Dean of the division. The counseling faculty continue working toward CACREP accreditation.

Division Faculty Meeting
What a joy it was to learn about Mark Engelhardt! He is multi-talented and has a wealth of experience in the field of education. Thanks for sharing, Mark!

Professional Development Meeting
Mobile Learning PD
Immediately following the faculty meeting, I presented information regarding the SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) model of integrating technology into the classroom. Faculty members brought mobile learning devices (smartphones, tablets, and/or laptops). We used our devices to explore new assessment and instructional apps. If you weren't able to attend, google DAQRI, Kahoot, and Plickers to learn more. This was my first experience flipping our professional development. I will continue to utilize screencasting to disseminate information.

MACTE preparation
David Collum, Tim Delicath, and I will be presenting at the MACTE meeting on Tuesday. We spent some time this week preparing for the conference presentation. The title of the session is Enhancing Preservice Teachers’ Understanding of the Educational Needs of Diverse Learners Using Simulation Based Learning

Board Academic Affairs Subcomittee
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with a subset of the MBU Board of Trustees to provide a brief overview of the 3 new programs we will offer.

  • Special Education Cross-categorical Disabilities Mild/Moderate (K-12)
  • Early Childhood Special Education (birth - grade 3)
  • K-12 Education
The board approved these three programs.

Library
The library has purchased a new book Groups in Practice: A School Counselor’s Collection (Routledge, New York & UK, June 2012, ISBN 9780415503723) by Debra Madaris Efird. The book is a practical manual with a dozen groups made easy, perfect for a Group Counseling (HUED 503) student or one completing an Internship (ELPS 583,ESPS 583) in which he or she may conduct a first group.  Each chapter highlights a different group, including Asperger Syndrome, ADD, Grief, Juvenile Diabetes, Relational Aggression, Underachieving Boys, and others.  Each chapter has a cited rationale, printable worksheets, and a group-specific evaluation form.

The library has also purchased two books with practice problems for the MoGEA. These two books will be placed on reserve under my name. Please encourage your students to review these two resources for help with the MoGEA.

Reminders

  • Grades are due Monday, March 2.
  • PLEASE encourage your students to complete course evaluations. If at all possible, do not give students their grades prior to the end of the session so that they will complete the evaluation.

Upcoming Meetings and Events:

  • MACTE Spring Conference - Monday, March 2 - Wednesday, March 4 Jefferson City
  • Spring Break - March 9-13
  • Faculty Meeting - Monday, March 16th 3:30pm Recital Hall
  • Division Faculty Meeting/Professional Development - Tuesday, March 24th 10:15am-11:45am

I would like to close with some powerful verses found in Colossians 4:5-6. I pray that the verses encourage you to be mindful of your words and actions when dealing with students.

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation always be full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Blessings,
Melanie
