Friday Memo - April 21, 2017
Kappa Delta Phi
A Kappa Delta Phi initiation meeting was held on Tuesday, April 18 and was very well attended. Mary Ann Bouas is in charge of this organization here on campus. Dr. Mark Engelhardt played a prelude before the ceremony.
Summer Syllabi
Tammy Cox, Director of Teacher Education would like to let you know that summer syllabi will soon be emailed to instructors that are assigned summer courses. Watch for this important email!
Twins in the Office
On Tuesday there was a twin siting. This was too good not to take a picture.
Graduation Reminder
Graduation is Tuesday, May 2. If you rented your regalia, I would like to urge you to:
#1. Make sure it fits.
#2. Iron it so it looks presentable.
I'm looking forward to celebrating with you and our students!
Senior Walk
It's a great MBU tradition for the seniors to walk from the SRC building to the chapel every year and the whole campus lines up to cheer them on. Here are some of our proud graduates.
Classroom Visits
I had the opportunity to pop into some classrooms this week. What a pleasure to watch you and your students talking, discussing, and learning more about teaching. If I haven't visited your classroom yet, please don't be alarmed if I slip in the door and find a seat at the back of the room.
MBU Ringers & Concert Band Performance
There was a performance of the MBU Ringers and Concert Band on Tuesday night. Our very own Mark Engelhardt was part of this performance.
Commissioning Service
Monday, May 1 is our first annual Commissioning Service for our students. We are super excited about this ceremony and have been busy planning. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall. A reception will be held immediately after. We hope to see you there.
Upcoming Meetings
Commissioning Service: May 1 at 7 p.m. in the Performance Hall
Graduation: May 2 at 7 p.m. at the Family Arena
Closing Thoughts
212 degrees
Mac Anderson, author of 212 Degrees Leadership - The 10 Rules for Highly Effective Leadership writes about water boiling at 212 degrees and how steam comes from the boiling water. Steam can power a locomotive. "It's that one extra degree that makes all the difference!" The Education Division Lead Team has been digging into this little motivational book to remind us of the power of the one extra degree. Here are just a few ideas presented in the book that I want you to ponder over the summer.
1. Think serve...not lead
2. Companies don't succeed...people do
3. Simplify your vision for success
4. Communicate, communicate, communicate
5. Set the stage for innovation
6. Take full responsibility
7. Commit to excellence
8. Measure results
9. Example is most important
I feel like our division is getting very close to 212 degrees. There are some awesome things happening right now that are making our programs better, I want to encourage all of you to continue being innovative, think outside of the box, and pursue excellence. With all of us moving in the same direction we will create steam that can power a locomotive! In Jim Collins book, Good to Great, he notes that good-to-great transformations resemble "relentlessly pushing a giant heavy flywheel in one direction, turn upon turn, building momentum until a point of breakthrough, and beyond."
Let's continue to pursue greatness, our students deserve it!
