Christmas in the Education Division
Thanksgiving is over and Christmas is right around the corner.  Thanks to our student worker, Julie Sieber, who put up our tree and made our hallway festive!

Accreditation Faculty Meeting
On Tuesday, November 22 the faculty met to discuss our upcoming CAEP and CACREP accreditation visits.  The counseling faculty met together to work on new courses and the education faculty heard from David Collum and his experience at a CAEP site visit in Texas. We went over the list of data we have and where it can be found so we can be well prepared for our visit in February 2018.

Lead Team Meeting
I have so many ideas floating around in my head to make this division even better than it already is, so I invited a few of my  faculty to help me sort through these ideas and hopefully bring some of them (or all) to fruition.  Our first meeting was Monday and I'm excited for the future.  Stay tuned!

Directors' Meeting
The directors met on Tuesday and had some great discussions about how to make field experience better, syllabi and CAD updates, lead instructors, and faculty taking assessments.  I always appreciate the input during these meetings.  Thank you to those who serve in your director capacity.

STL Read60
All MBU employees have an opportunity to volunteer to read to a child in the Ferguson-Florissant School District for 60 minutes/week.  This program is being spearheaded by The Crossing Church. Dr. Dykstra has given his approval for any employee to leave campus for one hour plus travel time, if it is ok with their direct supervisor. There will be an informational meeting on Thursday, December 8 at 2 p.m. at The Perk (free drink included).  Please consider volunteering for this wonderful opportunity to positively impact our local community. I would really like the Education Division to be heavily represented with this initiative.

Carolers
We had a plesant surprise Thursday afternoon by some wonderful carolers led by Jordan Cox.  What a great place to work!

CACREP
The counseling faculty gathered Thursday to finalize the new curriculum that will be presented to Academic Affairs and Graduate Affairs for approval for the 2017-2018 school year. I am so grateful to this group as they have completed hours of work updating the curriculum to be aligned to CACREP standards. Thanks so much Mary Ann, Scully, Christine, Jan, Laura, and Clint.  Keep pressing onward!

Congratulations to Scott Davidson - 100% APR at his school
Scott Davidson, MBU Education Division adjunct, is a principal at Jonesburg Elementary.  His building received an APR score of 100% which is a phenomenal accomplishment. The APR score is based on 90% of students attending school 90% of the time and students having 3-5% growth on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) in third, fourth, and fifth grade math and communication arts and fifth grade science from the previoius year.

Congratulations to Dr. Alicia Noddings
Our Assistant Dean, Dr. Alicia Noddings, will have an article published in the spring 2017 Montessori Life.  The title of the article is "Supporting Sensory-Sensitive Children in a Sensory-Intensive World." Montessori Life is an award-winning magazine of the American Montessori Society.

Closing Thoughts
I have been communicating the following with faculty and staff recently, but want to make sure I share it with all of you so you understand the basis of my decision making as I lead our division forward.
1. The curriculum and instruction that students experience in their programs is extremely important to me. I want them to have meaningful and effective C & I at the beginning, middle, and end of every program we offer.
2. The students' perception of their experiences here at MBU is also important to me. Our students are adults. Their opinions matter. They are our customers and we need to listen to them. It is our responsibility to provide positive experiences for our students and when they perceive their experiences positively, they share those positive experiences with others, which is important for recruiting and growing our programs.
3. The PK-12 schools' perception of our graduates is critical. I care what the school districts think about our graduates. We want the watching world to have a positive view of our graduates so that they will hire our graduates. This will also help for recruiting and enrollment.

I am so grateful for the work that you do every day with your students. There is excellent curriculum and instruction happening in the Education classes here at MBU. Keep up the great work!! Continue listening to your students' feedback and the feedback provided by our local districts. This feedback will keep us moving forward as we strive for continuous improvement.

Enjoy your weekend,
Melanie
