St. Charles Community College Presentation
Every fall I am invited to present to the education students at St. Charles Community College. Three other local universities also share with these students about their education programs. I was very encouraged when I walked into a packed auditorium. We were told to prepare for 75 students and there were about 125 in attendance. I am hopeful that the crowded room is an indication that more students are pursuing the field of education, and possibly joining our program in the coming years. This year I decided to invite one of our excellent graduates who attended at SCC prior to becoming a Spartan. Wally Fergson accepted my invitation and joined me during the presentation.  I interviewed Wally while on the stage and asked him a variety of questions. We did not rehearse his responses and I was so pleased with the way in which he answered the following question, "How was your experience as a student at Missouri Baptist?" Wally related his experience at MBU to one word - FAMILY. He described his experience at MBU as being part of a family. He spoke very highly of his experiences being a student at the Troy/Wentzville campus as he mentioned the small class sizes and the individualized attention specifically provided by Dr. E. (Mark Engelhardt). It is so wonderful to know that our students feel a part of our MBU family. Your actions and words make a difference!

Maker Spaces
Judith Scott represented MBU, serving  as a community mentor for Northeast Middle School (Parkway District) Friday, October 30, in the SPARK Incubator in Chesterfield.  As a service project, these 50  students  from NEMS are conceptualizing, developing prototypes, and ultimately constructing  Maker Spaces for hospitalized, chronically ill children.  The intent is to provide creative opportunities that will support the healing process for these seriously ill children.

Spartan Field Dedication
What a fun time of celebration of God's provision for our new Spartan Athletic Field! The rain stopped, the skies opened up, and we enjoyed a dedication ceremony at the new field. I encourage you to go take a look at this amazing facility if you were not able to attend. Lowell Pitzer did a great job participating in the dedication ceremony. As MBU acquires updated facilities, we are able to more easily recruit student athletes which ultimately benefits our institution and division as many of our education students are also athletes.

Alumni Awards
We produce some pretty amazing educators! We are so blessed to work at an institution that recognizes excellence from our alumni and encourages our participation in chapel activities. I encourage you to mark the Alumni chapel on your calendar next year. The Education Division faculty should attend to support our awesome alumni. Yesterday at chapel a variety of alumni awards were presented, and I was extremely proud to see three Education past and present students receiving awards. In addition to the two Education alumni awarded (see below) a current Elementary Education Major, Vanessa Snowbarger, was awarded the Mission in Action Award.

The following information came from the MBU website:
Educator of the Year Award: Michael Maclin - Michael Maclin's instructional leadership has been instrumental in increasing academic achievement and building performance in multiple school districts across the region. After serving in various leadership roles such as guidance counselor, teacher, assistant principal and principal. Maclin currently serves as principal of University City High School in University City, MO. At UCHS, he has instituted a number of innovative initiatives that have positives impacted student achievement, professional development and community involvement. The school has recently earned the nationally-recognized AdvanceEd Accreditation. Maclin is also the son of the late, Dr. Rick Maclin, who served as a professor of Business and Dean of Adult Learning at MBU.

Human Resources Workshop
I attended a one-day workshop to learn more about the most recent laws surrounding human resource issues. The legal principles and HR techniques presented and applied in the seminar helped me to understand the basics of major federal laws dealing with both equal employment opportunity and benefits, comprehend basic employee benefits, establish and maintain employee confidentiality, and engage in basic employee coaching and counseling.

CEEDAR Initiative
Susan Hladky and I met to discuss some potential projects that our division will pursue to meet the objectives of the CEEDAR work. Susan, Shelton, and I will be meeting with Thurma DeLoach, CEEDAR statewide project manager, on Monday to review our ideas. Susan will provide an update at our division faculty meeting on Tuesday.

AACTE Annual Meeting
David Collum and I met to work out some details of our presentation at the 68th annual American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education National Meeting to be held in Las Vegas in February. We are looking forward to presenting our research on simSchool and attending a variety of excellent sessions related to our work in teacher preparation.

Today I met with Tammy Cox, Graduate Studies Advisor and Part-Time Education Instructor. I am honored, humbled, and excited that she has asked me to serve as her dissertation committee chair. Many of you serve as committee members and chairs so you know the time commitment involved with such a duty. I have told you before, but I will tell you again - thank you for serving our students in this way. We play a critical role in this culminating professional journey for our students, many of whom will go on to leadership positions in their fields.

Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Proverbs 9:9-10

Have a great weekend!
