Friday Memo 4/10/15
Catch up on the latest Education Division news and updates below.
Counseling
Mary Ann Conaway and I continue searching for the perfect candidate. I spoke with our CACREP consultant, Dr. Verl Pope, this week to discuss a variety of issues regarding our pursuit of CACREP accreditation. I feel much more confident about the process after my conversation with Dr. Pope about the future of the Counseling program.
Doctoral Program
I have been enjoying working with doctoral students. I encourage all of you to let Heather Goodin if you are interested in serving on a doctoral committee. We are always in need of interested committee members willing to guide a doctoral student through the dissertation process.
Ed. Specialist - Curriculum & Instruction Program
Carl Holschen met with the instructors in this program on Thursday. The group discussed curriculum and course offerings. They also discussed the platform being used for the portfolio. Thanks to Brie Nelson for doing some research to determine if we should use Google Docs or Canvas for the portfolio. At this time, we will continue requiring students to utilize Google Docs for their program portfolio. Kate Wayne and Brenda Rone will be making some revisions to EDUC 613CI: Learning Innovations for School Improvement and EDUC 673CI: Teacher as Leader.
Education Division shirts
Thanks to Ellen John for coordinating our desire for Education Division apparel. We will be meeting with a potential vendor in a few weeks. We will keep you posted about opportunities for you to purchase TEACH ON wear!
CAEP Annual Conference
Tonia Crane attended the CAEP pre-conference in Denver, Colorado. She learned valuable information that will help us as we prepare for our next visit in 2018. She will provide a brief update at the next division faculty meeting regarding the types of data we need to begin systematically collecting. Campus Labs will be able to help us collect, organize, and analyze our data. Please be looking for opportunities to learn how to use the Baseline and Compliance Assist modules.
CAEP APR
Kathleen Wendt, Tonia Crane, and I met to continue working on our Annual Performance Report that is due next Friday. We will be sharing some information regarding this report at the faculty meeting Tuesday.
Sneak Peek
I will be explaining this further at the faculty meeting on Tuesday; however, please be considering the following idea for our final division faculty and professional development meeting.
I would like to showcase the great work you all are doing in your classrooms. We will have a time of sharing data-driven best practices at our final meeting of this school year - Tuesday, April 28th. Yes, I know that is also the day of graduation. You will be busy wrapping up your grading and submitting grades, but I want you to be inspired and encouraged as we head off to summer. We will be having a time of sharing Spartan Success Stories: What Works in MBU's Education Courses as Evidenced by Data.
I am asking that each full-time faculty member come prepared to our final division faculty meeting with a 2-5 minute presentation of one strategy, assignment, or method that you currently utilize in your class(es). You must choose your success story based on something that can be proven with data, such as student course evaluation data, assignment scores, discussion board feedback, etc. Please don't stress over this - you are all doing amazing work in your classroom that you need to share with others. You do not need to bring any handouts or prepare a powerpoint. You certainly can bring handouts if you think it might benefit the other faculty members. You don't have to provide a hard copy of the evidence of the data you used to justify your choice of success story, but I do want you to explain to the group what data you used and what the data told you that convinced you that your method, strategy, or assignment demonstrates student learning.
Prayer Requests
Michael Kreitler's grandmother, Stella Kirkman, passed away at the age of 94. She lived a long life and is now in heaven walking with Jesus. Please keep Michael's dad, aunt, and uncles in your prayers - Bob, Nick, Ron, and Rose.
Shelton Smith's father is in his last days. Please pray for Shelton and his family.

I am inspired by the simplicity of the following scripture verse and how it applies to our work here at MBU.
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. I Thessalonians 4:11-12
Let's continue teaching our students in our daily life to win their respect and the respect of outsiders.
Have a blessed weekend!
