Friday Memo: August 25, 2017

Review, Reflect, & Revise
These three words will be our theme for this school year. We will not only review and reflect upon data we collected for CAEP, but I challenge you to review and reflect on  your teaching practices as the division as a whole considers how we can improve our programs and revise curriculum and instruction to pursue excellence as we prepare educators and counselors.

Monday, August 21 - Total Eclipse
MBU Main Campus celebrated with an eclipse party on the quad with free Moon Pies.  Everyone gathered together to witness this phenomenal experience. More on that in my closing thoughts. Here are some pictures that really don't do it justice.

Tuesday, August 22
During the division faculty meeting, we began the process of reviewing our CAEP data. We briefly looked at the MoCA data and will be continuing to review data throughout the year. There is a lot of good data that we will be reflecting on and then begin revising our curriculum and instruction. I look forward to working with you and helping fine tune our program to help our students be more successful.

We welcome Patrick Cleveland to our group of full time faculty.  Patrick will be working with the Counselor Education folks.  We are excited to have Patrick join us.  He's in FLD-317. Stop by and welcome him if you're on Main Campus.

I started a new tradition this year that I'm calling the Traveling Apple Award. The Traveling Apple will be awarded each month during our faculty meeting to a faculty member that has shown outstanding work in the classroom. Our first Traveling Apple Award went to Clint Limoges. Clint's students have high praise for him on the student evaluations. Thank you Clint and keep up the good work.

Writing Resources
Students are always in need of writing resources. Christine Ward and Elizabeth Busekrus came up with the following links that you can share with your students.

The Writing Space
MBU Writing Lab
Purdue's OnLine Writing Lab
APA Style Guide

The following information will be added to the Education Division Professional Development Canvas Shell.
  • MBU Writing Lab's APA Formatting Guide
  • MBU Writing Lab's Sample APA Paper
  • MBU Counselor Education Program's Sample Literature Review Synthesis Matrix
Field Experience Orientation
On Tuesday, August 22 we held the Field Experience Orientation. Dr. Susan Hladky spoke to approximately 30 students and then they were able to meet with their supervisors.

CACREP Update
The first official cohort began this fall with a total of 70 students. 54 are pursuing licensure (which includes clinical mental health or combined clinical mental health and school counseling) and 16 are pursuing school counseling.
Dr. Jan Speck teaching a CACREP class with students face-to-face and live streaming.

Director Updates
Dr. Clint Limoges is now the Director of Counselor Education. Tammy Cox is the Director of Folio, and Mary Ann Bouas is Director of MAT & MSE.

There will be a Directors' meeting on Tuesday, August 29 at 10:15 a.m. in the Field Conference Room.

SimSchool Class
Dr. David Collum meets with his students each semester to go over the details of SimSchool. Since this is a zero credit class, pizza and snacks are offered to thank the students for attending (especially our RLC students who drive a far distance).

New Campus Minister
Our new Campus Minister is Aaron Lumpkin. He led the first chapel of the year yesterday telling everyone that his theme for the year is "believe." He shared the good news of the gospel.

Matriculation Ceremony
On Friday, August 18 a Matriculation ceremony was held in the chapel.

Lowell Pitzer and Mark Engelhardt attended the ceremony.
Welcome Weekend
The activities during Welcome Weekend are always exciting. Below you will find pictures from the lunch with students and their guests. An Advisor Luncheon was held on Saturday, and Ricki, Kathleen, and I had the opportunity to meet with several of our new students and feel confident that this is going to be a great year!

Reminders
Turn in your office hours to DeAnn Faulkner and Nancy Sickler if you haven't already.

Upcoming Meetings
August 29: Directors' Meeting at 10:15 a.m. in FLD 115
September 12: Faculty Meeting at 10:15 a.m. in FLD 115. Don't forget to meet in the rotunda for our group photo.

Closing Thoughts
It has been interesting as I talk to various people about their thoughts of the eclipse. Some people express their overwhelming emotions as they watched the heavenly bodies provide a spectacular and glorious show. While others didn't quite understand all the hype. Two things impacted me deeply while experiencing the eclipse: 1) People were all looking to the skies at the same time and 2) Even a total eclipse of the sun can't keep the light out.
As we all looked up on Monday and experienced this once in a lifetime event, most of us stood together and for a short moment in time we were focused on something other than ourselves. And that selfless moment, when we celebrated experiencing something totally new together meant we weren't focusing on our selves and our problems. There was this peaceful feeling that surrounded the experience. Perhaps this is what heaven will feel like!
What struck me the most was that during the total eclipse, the corona was powerfully spreading light in a beautiful fashion, unlike what we normally see. I was reminded of the light of Christ and the corona that His light produces. May we be encouraged as we try to emulate Christ as we shine on at MBU!
