Friday Memo 8/28/15

As much as I enjoy the slow pace of summer, I am much more energized by the more structured and more productive days of the school year. Please read below for more information about the happenings in the Education Division this past week.

President's Party
Full-time faculty and staff were invited to attend a celebration in the Great Hall last Friday night. The president does a great job entertaining us as he presents awards to faculty and staff who are new, have been working at MBU for milestone years, or are recently retired. Congratulations to those of you who were honored!

F
ield Experience/Student Teaching/Internship Supervision
This semester I have required all full-time faculty members to supervise students out in the field. Most of our adjuncts are practicing educators working in schools, so they are able to stay up-to-date on current practices. Full-time faculty members (myself included) need to intentionally seek out opportunities to be in the field. Many faculty members were out in schools this week with initial meetings with their students. I am excited to be supervising Brian Crump at Festus Middle School. As I waited for the bell to ring, I sat in the office and chatted with the secretaries, one of whom is a very happy student in our MAT program. Then the principals joined us and we discussed our leadership programs, one of whom is a graduate of our MEA program. Then I met with my student and his cooperating teacher to discuss the student teaching requirements.

Division Faculty Meeting
We spent time at the faculty meeting reviewing student and principal feedback for student teachers, first year teachers, and counseling students in their internship. We read the feedback and discussed what we gathered from the information. We will continue our discussions and professional development related to the areas noted in the feedback.
Alicia Noddings shared a few pointers on Canvas. The information was well-received, and I will be adding Alicia to the faculty meeting agenda for the rest of the school year for her to continue providing Canvas tips. She reminded the faculty that she is available to help with the course delivery, not just trouble-shooting. Adjunct and full-time faculty, please feel comfortable to contact Alicia for Canvas help.
The faculty members also took a survey, using the Campus Labs Respond App on their mobile devices, with ideas for our professional development for the year. See the word clouds created by their responses below.

Regional Learning Center - T/W
James Bertels, adjunct instructor and administrator in the Troy R-III School District, sent me some pictures from his class, Integrated Math Concepts at the Troy/Wentzville Regional Learning Center. Students were analyzing the Common Core Math standards and looking at similarities and differences with GLE's. Big discoveries and great experience for students! Thanks, James, for sending these pictures. It is fantastic to see what's happening in our RLCs.

CEEDAR & Rethinking Special Education Meeting
Shelton Smith and I are at a meeting in Columbia to continue our work with the CEEDAR (Collaboration for Effective Educator Development, Accountability, and Reform) initiative, DESE, and four other IHEs to move forward ensuring we prepare educators to work with ALL children. We will begin work on this initiative at MBU in the next few weeks with a convening of our established work group.

Shelton sharing his thoughts from the CEEDAR convening in Washington D.C. this past summer.

In closing, the following is an excerpt from "Walking With Christ Every Day."
Matthew 10:8 - Freely you have received, freely give.

"Kindness and generosity are woven into the fabric of the Christian faith.  And, because we are important role models to our students, we have an obligation to demonstrate generosity not only by our words, but also by our deeds.  The words of Matthew 10:8 are clear:  because we have received so much from our Creator, we are commanded to give freely to His children.  As followers of Christ, we have been immeasurably blessed.  In return, we must give generously of our time, our possessions, our testimonies, and our love.  Today and every day, let Christ's words be your guide and let His eternal love fill your heart.  When you do, your stewardship will be a reflection of your love for Him, and that's exactly as it should be.  After all, He loved you first."

"Generosity is changing one's focus from self to others."  John Maxwell

Have a great day and a blessed weekend.
