Friday Memo 3/6/15

This week's blog will be focused on the events of the Missouri Association of Colleges of Teacher Education Spring Conference.

Outstanding Beginning Teachers
The highlight of the conference for me was recognizing the Outstanding Beginning Teachers from across the state. Our OBTs were Melinda Golubski and Brandon Riley. It was refreshing to see our graduates and others from across the state as they were recognized for their good work in the classroom. It was a wonderful reminder why we do what we do! After the banquet we went to the Capitol Building and met some of our local representatives. We were even invited to the floor of the House just before they went into session. It was a great opportunity for our local legislators to meet some outstanding beginning teachers, and it was a great opportunity for Melinda and Brandon to be recognized for their efforts.

Presentation
David Collum, Tim Delicath, and I presented Enhancing Preservice Teachers' Understanding of the Educational Needs of Diverse Learners Using Simulation Based Learning. There was a good crowd and the audience seemed genuinely interested in the topic. Colleagues from a few universities have expressed an interest in partnering with us to continue the research project. I was very proud of David. He did an outstanding job sharing the results of his study with the group!

Meeting with the Commissioner
The Missouri Council of Education Deans met with Dr. Margie Vandeeven to discuss the plethora of changes coming from DESE. The meeting was productive, and I feel that the commissioner is aware of many issues and is willing to listen to our concerns.

MoPTA and Data Collection
The majority of the conference focused on these two topics. I learned some extremely helpful information about the MoPTA. I look forward to sharing this information with the student teaching seminar instructors and university supervisors in the near future. Erica Bumpers will continue to share information with all involved regarding these new assessments. Data collection was also a hot topic. As regulations are getting tighter, our need to collect more and more data is critical. Tonia Crane will be leading the charge as we continue collecting data for program improvement and accreditation purposes.

I hope you all have a safe and restful Spring Break! My prayer is that you will come back rejuvenated and ready to finish out the year strong!

Mark 6:31a - And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while."

Have a great break!
Melanie
