This was a busy week in the Education Division. This is a small snapshot of what we were up to this past week:

  • Backpack to Briefcase – Career Services presented an excellent panel of alumni professionals, including Tammy Cardona. I particularly enjoyed the following quote from Tammy, “Every decision I make today impacts a child forever.” See picture below. The panel participants shared their experiences regarding the transition from college to the professional setting. Career Services will offer a similar session in the spring specifically for Education students.
  • New items in the library – see below
  • Program Design Task Force – Carl Holschen, Kathleen Wendt, Alicia Noddings, Mary Ann Bouas, Jim Chellew, Tonia Crane, and Judith Scott gathered to continue working on our program redesign to address the new DESE certification requirements. Work is continuing on the following:
  1. New course ECTA 323 Curriculum, Assessment, and Data-Based Decision Making
  2. Revising ECTA 523 Integration of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
  3. Revising EDPS 453/553 The Exceptional Child
  4. New course EDMS 413/513 Coordination of Cooperative Education
  5. IEP Flowchart
  6. New Course ECSP 423/523 Family Engagement
  7. Integration of Instructional Assistive Technology topics into existing courses
  8. Revising ECED 363 Family and Community Resources
  9. Revising ECED 453/553 Role of Movement and Creative Arts
  10. Revising ECED 413/513 Language Acquisition of the Young Child
  11. Revising Music and PE Methods to include required competencies
  12. Revising  Field Experience I and II to reflect changes
  13. Moving Standard Reflections 8 and 9 from Field courses to EDPS 453/553 Exceptional Child and EDUC 203 Teaching in a Diverse Society
  14. Program Proposal for K-12 Cross Categorical Stand Alone Certification
  15. Program Proposal for Early Childhood Special Education Stand Alone Certification


  • Veteran’s Day – Thanks again to all of those who serve or have served in our military.
  • Division Faculty Meeting – We discussed MACTE, ICUM, Mobile Learning Initiative, DESE transition plan, Teacher Education Council, Strategic Plan, Counselor Updates, and Judith Scott closed out the meeting with a portion of her presentation about Gifted Students at the Missouri School Counselors Association.
  • Pedagogical training discussion – Carl Holschen, Margie Daiber, and I met to discuss how we should more effectively teach our students how to write and understand instructional objectives.
  •  Visit to Spoede Elementary School - Alicia Noddings and I had the pleasure of visiting Spoede Elementary school this week to observe how technology is being used in their building. It was fascinating to watch kindergarten students using ipads, Promethean boards, and laptops during center time.
  • Portfolio Celebration – Main Campus and Regional Learning Centers conducted the portfolio celebration events this week. If you have never attended this event, I encourage you to attend in the spring. It is a true pleasure to hear from our students as they present about their student teaching and MBU experiences.
  • Missouri Technical Advisory Council – Tonia Crane is in Jefferson City today representing Missouri Baptist University at the recently formed MoTAC group that works together and with DESE to discuss data collection and assessment of our teacher preparation programs.
  •  Focus on Teaching and Technology Conference – Tim Delicath, David Collum, Alicia Noddings, and Sheri Brandes are attending the conference today.
  •  School Counseling Meeting – Mary Ann Conaway, Jan Speck, Larry Richardson, and I met to discuss the new standards, assessments, and updating advising sheets.

God has blessed this division and MBU with amazing faculty, staff, and students. He continues to guide our division and allows us to continue ministering to people through education. I challenge you to praise Him and give glory to His name. Continue to look to Him for strength.

Veteran's Day We owe a debt of gratitude to all former and current military men and women for their service to our country. Please take a few minutes and read the Missing Man Table note that is placed on a table in the dining hall. This note brought some of us to tears as we reflected on those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. If you are on campus, I encourage you to stop in the dining hall to see the display. Tribute to Shelton Smith

Today's blog is dedicated to my friend, Shelton Smith. If you would like, feel free to add thoughts and memories of Shelton in the comment section below.  In Memory of Dr. Shelton Smith Dr. Shelton Smith lost his battle with cancer on Thursday, December 13, 2018. February 24, 1945 - December 13, 2018  Glenda & Shelton Shelton's family Shelton with his daughters, Heather & Erika, on Father's Day You couldn't talk to Shelton for very long without him talking about his family. You would hear about his lovely wife Glenda; his two daughters, Erika and Heather and their husbands; and all of his grandchildren. He was very proud of all of them and was always ready to show you pictures and tell you stories. Shelton earned his Bachelor's in Education in 1967, Master's in Education in 1972, and his Ed.S. in District Administration in 1974 from Southeast Missouri State. Friday Memo 9/30/16

Ron Brandly This week we celebrated the life of Ron Brandly and mourn his death from this earth, but we rest assured that he is teaching and talking and loving people in heaven. Ron was one of the most joyful and kind men I have ever met. He truly loved working at Missouri Baptist University and working with doctoral students. At his funeral there were several references made about Missouri Baptist University and his love of working with the people at MBU. At the luncheon that followed the funeral, Shelton Smith had the opportunity to share of Ron's service to teaching and serving on dissertation committees. A couple of our doctoral graduates, Elaine Henderson and Todd Culbertson, were there to attest to his caring attitude. We are grateful for his service and will miss him dearly!
